As we grow up, we start being aware of our surroundings and then eventually of ourselves. Adolescence is probably a time when the phenomenon of self awareness is the most prevalent and has a crucial effect on our day to day life. What is certain is that this aspect constantly changes. I can’t help but wonder then, what stimulates this change of perspective and which version is the closest to authenticity?
There’s little to no doubt that interactions are a factor that contributes to how we perceive ourselves. When facing trouble establishing my worth and values, I often ask myself: Can the perception of oneself come solely from within disregarding what others think? Or should external opinions be seen as constructive criticism, an essential aspect for personal growth? I believe there is no such thing as a right answer to this, mostly because the issue is more nuanced than we think. However, I believe that having an open mind, processing and filtering feedback objectively can only lead to improvement. (The rest is up to each individual.)
The mental state that we are in, whether that is a temporary feeling or a constant struggle, influences the way we perceive ourselves. This may or may not be linked to how we have been brought up. Our judgment can surely be distorted for instance when we are faced with constant disapproval and we tend to underestimate our capabilities. But then comes the question: can our worth actually be measured and if so, which version of it is the closest to the truth? These aspects are social constructs and therefore, the way I see it, they are subjective. Regardless, I think that the most authentic self is when our expectations, beliefs, and external feedback align or balance harmoniously.
Yet another aspect that plays a major role in our self discovery journey is coming of age. Maturity brings to many a stronger self esteem, by being able to set boundaries, to not fear conflict, failure, setbacks, to voice needs, to be more assertive and to embrace who you really are. In other words, a sense of self reflection has a higher chance of existing with as little as no external influence in adulthood, rather than before.
Nonetheless, I’ve come to accept that this is a subjective, often unpredictable matter, but despite all of this, I hope that we can all agree that each of us is valuable, worthy of respect, care and love.
